Ooh thanks, Valentina! Whenever we travel, the first thing we do every morning is head to the markets.
Great "walk through" - feels like we're right there beside you ☺️. Would love to tuck into some porchetta grassa with a big side of cotenna and salami.
Other than in Florence where we went to the Mercato Centrale to buy a handbag, all shopping was done in Supermarkets or delicatessens (not sure what they call them in Italy), and I found in the Supermarket in Colle di Val d’Elsa it was necessary to wear disposable gloves, something foreign for me. Definitely in France I found you had to queue, and it was handy to have my limited French. Your post will certainly give people a good idea of what to look for. Wish we were heading back to bath France and Italy once again.
I HATE the plastic gloves policy and it is completely useless. It’s like that in all supermarkets in the country. The delis are called Alimentari ☺️ and I love those! Have you make it back here!
So, it is still an obligatory thing! Not here in Australia, which is one reason to not only wash your hands when finishing unpacking your groceries, but to wash all fruit and vegetables, we are getting a bit anal since Covid. But, neither my husband and I have had it, yay! I don’t think we will ever get back due to our age and travel insurance. If it was just me making the decision I would definitely return, but as my husband spent all of his working years in the Insurance industry he is absolutely a pain when it comes to risk. I am of the opinion when your number is up it is up! Until we meet again again on Substack 🤗
Oooh yes. And, for me, crucial stalls that make it feel homely are: that lady selling lingerie and men's pants, socks and nightwear; the guy sharpening knives out of the back of his van; and the person with just one small crate of something (tomatoes, apples, basil) but a *very good something*. Cappuccino after market? You delinquent! It's a square of thick doughy pizza al taglio.
No pizza al taglio in my area but look, if there’s no doubling up in the cappuccino you can always skip straight to the spritz 👀
How could I forget the knife sharpener! And they’re in France too!
Then again it is true that the Italian market economy could completely stand on That One Lady Selling Socks alone - most of my lingerie comes from her 😆
Nonnas unhinged! 😂😂😂
And F E A R L E S S
Don’t mess with Nonna💥
Why do I torture myself reading this. 😄
Everything looks great.
Loved it thank you!
This was fascinating to read! I didn't realize the market vibes would be so different in Italy.

And as for the gorgeous design duvet covers? So much. I'm always a bit sad in French markets that there doesn't seem to be as much non food stuff.
Loved this! Thank you. Now can't wait for my next trip so I can explore more markets :)
